Why You Need An Email List And How To Build One From Scratch?

Jun 27, 2020

Before we start learning how to build an email list from scratch, we should try to understand why you need an email list in the first place.  When many bloggers start making an email list from scratch, they panic. They probably imagine that they need an elaborate email funnel system to get into the inbox of their potential audiences.

It doesn’t have to be that complicated! All you need is a tempting freebie offer and an email marketing platform to get you started.

Why Do I Need An Email List?

Let’s start with why experienced bloggers keep harping about having an email list. They do so because when you have an email list, you get to:

Talk Directly To Your Readers

Getting an email list is the modern-day equivalent of getting a letter delivered to your doorstep. You’ve got to admit, there’s some excitement in getting a good email.

It’s like writing a letter to your audience, and the more personal you make it, the better your chances of connecting with your audience will be.

Better Rate of Conversion

Email lists have a higher rate of conversions. I’ll tell you my theory behind this. With emails, you get a longer concentrated-time with your audience. They get to know you and get the opportunity to see what you can do for them. They also begin to build trust with you as you guide them through your world.

It’s not like social media where they can scroll down and see an even more interesting story beneath. Your message doesn’t get trampled upon. Once your targeted audience opens your email, they at least look through what you have to say. This gives you more than the 5 seconds you get on a social media post.

How to Build An Email List from Scratch?

Now what we have established the importance of an email list, let’s start building an email list for you:

Start with a tempting offer

What can you offer to your potential customer in exchange for their email? The ‘Subscribe To Our Newsletter’ NEVER works. Nowadays your subscribers want something in return for their email.

Your offer should also exercise your authority and build goodwill amongst your subscribers. Some things you can offer are:

  • A discount. Who doesn’t get tempted with a discount code? Make the discount even more interesting by offering them a spin of a prize wheel or a chance to have a 1:1 with you!
  • A freebie. This could be anything from an ebook to a small webinar series to establish your authority amongst your audience and leave them wanting more in depth information on the subject.

When deciding on your offer, keep your audience in mind. I would suggest creating an ideal audience persona. Think of what challenges your potential clients are facing, and how you can use your email list to help them deal with those challenges.

Check-in with your market. See what is being offered.

Choose Your Email Building Platform

The next question you probably have in your mind is where do I collect the emails? There are a few email marketing platforms that help your build your email list and subsequently start building on the connection.

These include Mailchimp, Constant Contact, AWeber, and Mailer Lite. Mailchimp and Mailer Lite are free initially, so you may want to start with them.

Build Your Landing Page

This is the place your customers come to claim the offer. This could be the main page of your website, or it could be a page where you introduce your services in detail (with testimonials and case studies) to further lure them to subscribe.

All the email marketing platforms listed above come with preexisting landing page templates. All you have to do is change the text, and your brand colors. You don’t need to be a techie to you can build your page.

Direct Your Audience to the Landing Page

Now that your landing page is made, the next thing you should be doing is directing all your website viewers to the landing page.

How do you do it?

Mention your offer frequently in your blogs with a link to the page. Keep doing it in all your blog posts.

Social Media and Ads

If your website is fairly new, you might not be getting tons of viewers. This means your exposure to potential subscribers is limited.

This is where you will need social media and social media ads to build your email list. Promote your offer on your social media frequently. Create a facebook cover graphic around it. Feature your freebie on your IG stories!

And don’t be afraid to invest in ads when the time comes. Target these ads to the audience you are trying to attract, and watch your email list grow. Depending on your target audience, you can purchase ads on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and almost any other social media platform for as little at $10 a day.

Once you have started to build an email list, remember that it’s not about adding numbers to the list. It’s more about building a relationship with your ideal clients. Introduce them to better offers, rich content, and a better connection with your brand.
